In hiding in the Wartburg Castle, Luther took the alias Junker Jörg and began translating the bible. Luther relied heavily on the Greek original text while also using the
Vulgata*. Even the current version of the Luther Bible from 1984 takes from the text-formatting of the old Vulgata, while the Nova Vulgata uses the original Greek text.

The handwritten notes in the margins provide evidence of a very intensive use and are likely those of Georg Spalatin. A more precise examination of this is currently ongoing. Spalatin's bible can be found today in the possession of the city Altenburg.
