At the location where the Brüderkirche stands today was at one time the Franziskaner Kloster (Franciscan Monastery). The Franciscan Monastery was founded in the second half of the 13th Century. The Franciscan Monks called themselves Brothers Minor or simply Brothers. The rules of the Order, given by Franz von Assisi, bid the Brothers to live simply and in poverty - this is where their title "Bare-foot Order" comes from. In 1897 new construction plan from Jürgen Kröger was decided upon and they were carried out between 1902 and 1904.
