Until their secularization in 1543, the Rote Spitzen were the most important monastery in Pleißenland. Originally it was the Augustiner-Chorherren Monastery on the Mountain, which was dedicated in the presence of Kaiser Friedrich I Barbarossa, that was known as the "Bergerkloster". The title "Rote Spitzen" first originated in the 19th Century. The basilica was built in romantic style out of brick between 1165 and 1172.
