The Castle was built upon Porphyry rock in the 12th or 13th century and was first used as an Imperial Palace, then as second residence of the Saxonian Electors, then from 1603-1673 and again from 1826-1918 as the Residence Castle of the Saxony-Altenburg Dukes. The castle's current baroque-style is thanks to reconstruction work between 1706 and 1730.
