The great-great grandson of Martin Luther, Johann Friedrich Luther was born April 17th, 1658 and died July 13th, 1677 in Altenburg with his Uncle. Johann Friedrich Luther lived to only 19 years old. He was laid to rest in the former building of the Brüderkirche, the Franciscan Church. Following the demolition of the old Brüderkirche, the gravestone was taken from the church and placed at the wall of the former latin-school and rectory. For a long time the stone was thought to have been lost. First during a systematic dig carried-out by the Altenburger Akademie der evangelischen Erwachsenenbildung Thüringen was the Gravestone again discovered. The "Lutheran Rose" on the Luthers' family shield is hardly recognizable today.
